WELCOME

What is the Coos Watershed Association?
The Coos Watershed Association is a local non-profit organization formed in late 1993.  It’s a way for people with a wide range of interests to get together and develop the “big picture” of the conditions in the Coos watershed, and it helps individual landowners to decide how to manage and restore the watershed’s natural systems.

What is the Coos watershed?
A “watershed” is the area of land, from ridge to ridge, that ultimately drains to a particular body of water.  The “Coos watershed” is the area of land that drains through Coos Bay into the Pacific Ocean.  It includes all forks and tributaries of the Coos and Millicoma Rivers, and all of the sloughs and creeks that drain into Coos Bay.

Mission Statement
To provide a framework to coordinate and implement proven management practices, and test promising new management practices, designed to promote environmental integrity and economic stability for communities of the Coos watershed.

Board of Directors
The Association’s Executive Council includes representatives of local ranching and agriculture, small woodlot owners, industrial timber operators, commercial fisheries and aquaculture, environmental groups, tribal land managers, and local, state, and federal land managers such as the Coos County Forest, Elliott State Forest, South Slough National Estuarine Research Reserve, and the U.S. Bureau of Land Management.

Staff
The Association's staff includes a group of individuals with diverse backgrounds and interests. The Association is an equal opportunity employer and it is its policy to employ, retain, promote, and otherwise treat all employees and job applicants on the basis of merit, qualifications and competence.

COOS COUNTY TEACHERS LEARN ABOUT INVASIVE SPECIES

As part of the Watershed and Invasive Species Education (WISE) training hosted by the Coos Watershed Association and Oregon Sea Grant, Coos County teachers learned about new ways to incorporate invasive species education into their classroom. This two day workshop was designed to provide knowledge, tools, and resources for teachers to lead a stewardship project in their local watershed.

Highlights from the workshop included a field trip to the Charleston Boat Basin to observe the invasive sea squirts and a field trip to Pony Slough to learn about riparian planting projects at the North Bend High School.

STORMDRAIN MURALS IN COOS BAY

Members of ORCCA's Community Action Adventure group helped design and paint two mural around stormdrains in Coos Bay. These marine-themed murals are designed to make the connection that what goes down the stormdrain goes directly into our bay and therefore affects the marine ecosystem. The murals are located at the new visitor's center and at the pedway in Coos Bay.

We would like to thank the partners who made this project possible: ORCCA and the Community Action Adventure group, the City of Coos Bay, and CH2M Hill for donating all the supplies.
