The Coos Watershed Association meets on the second Tuesday of each month at 7:00 AM in the training room at the rear of the Campbell Global facility on the North Bend waterfront. These meetings are open to the public. Stay informed of the Association's work by reviewing the Board meeting minutes.


November 2014

Executive Committee Meeting, November 4, 2014: This meeting (closed to the public) will be held from 7:00 - 8:00 AM at the Oregon Department of Forestry in Coos Bay.

Board Meeting, November 11, 2014: This meeting will be held from 7:00 - 8:00 AM at The Campbell Group in North Bend.


December 2014

Fall 2014

CoosWA in the Community (Outreach Tabling):

  • November 14 - SWOCC Geology Lecture Series #2 (coastal geomorphology), by Dr. Jon Allan, Hales Center, 7:00pm (lobby opens at 6:00pm).
  • October 25 - SWOCC Geology Lecture Series: "Plastic in the Ocean", by Dr. Giora Proskurowski, Hales Center, 7:00pm (Lobby opens at 6:00pm).
  • October 15 - Natural Resources Student Career Day, Hales Center 10:00am to 2:00pm. Free event for current SWOCC students, and high school students living in South Coast (Reedsport, west to Powers, south to Brookings). Register by October 8: SWOCC student registration form; high school student registration form.
  • October 4 - Octoberfish, Charleston Marina, 11:00am to 4:00pm (FYI: Octoberfish activities run from noon on Friday to 6pm on Sunday; CoosWA tables only on Saturday afternoon. Please see the Octoberfish website for more information.)
  • September 27 - SWOCC Welcome Expo, SWOCC Quad, 11:30am to 1:30pm
  • September 27 - Stand Up! For The Bay, Coos Bay Boardwalk, 12:00 to 2:30pm
  • September 18 - Passport to Charleston, OIMB, 7:00pm to 8:30pm
  • September 13-14 -Salmon Festival, Mill Casino, 10:00am to 6:00pm on Saturday, 10:00am to 4:00pm on Sunday


October 2014

Friends of South Slough Trail & Treat - October 25, South Slough Interpretive Center, 8:00 am

1-mile kids fun run and 5k run/walk on the beatiful trails of South Slough National Estuarine Research Reserve. Registration for the kids run is $1 and $10 for the 5k. Estuary-themed costumes are encouraged!

All proceeds go to Friends of South Slough and supports education and internship programming at South Slough NERR (which in turn helps educate youth on the importance of ecological stewardship in the Coos watershed and introduces students to natural resource pathways--a worthy cause indeed!).

Register online, download a registration form to bring to the event, or fill out a form the day of. Registration begins at 8am; the kids run starts at 8:45am and the 5k starts at 9am.

Registration and the stating line are at the South Slough Interpretive Center, located at 61907 Seven Devils Road (4 miles south of Charleston).

Public Talk: "Plastic in the Ocean - October 25, Hales Center, 7:00 PM

Do you know about the Great Pacific Garbage Patch? Have you ever heard of nurdles? Can you guess how much waste washes ashore yearly on Oregon's coast?

Plastic debris in the ocean is a very serious and increasingly acknolwedged issue, affecting everything from marine wildlife hundreds of miles from land to coastal communities. Dr. Giora Proskurowski of the University of Washington will present on "Plastic in the Ocean".

Coos Watershed Association, Washed Ashore, South Slough National Estuarine Research Reserve, and the Coos Bay Chapter of Surfrider will table in the lobby starting at 6pm, and be available to answer questions after the talk.

2014 Annual Meeting

Coos Watershed Association held its 2014 Annual Meeting on Wednesday, March 12th, at the North Bend Library. We were honored to have Ken Bierly give the keynote address. Ken served for many years with the Oregon Department of State Lands and Oregon Watershed Enhancement Board. In 2012, the Ecological Society of America awarded Ken a Regional Policy Award for his pioneering and innovate work, and long-term commitment to Oregon’s streams, rivers, wetlands and other natural areas.
