CoosWA's stream gage monitoring helps build a more complete set of data that captures long-term trends and increases the accuracy of water resource predictions for Coos Bay.
CoosWA currently operates and maintains 9 stream gages on the following streams: South Fork Coos, West and East Fork Millicoma, Tioga, Winchester, Tenmile, Eel, Whiskey Run and Marlow. Of these stream gages, data from 5 are uploaded every 15 minutes on our website (cooswatershed.org). Water level and volumetric discharge data from the gages are used to create a “ratings curve”, or the correlation of measured water surface elevation with stream gages (Kennedy, 1984). Each stream gage is visited monthly to calibrate equipment readings with real-time stream measurements. In addition, 2 high flow measurements are taken each year to further improve the accuracy of the ratings curve and allow for greater confidence in extrapolation of any data missing. Data is archived and processed using Kister’s WISKI software and available on our website for download.
